The Gainesville Hurricanes baseball team came home to Tiny Talbot Field on Tuesday night to host the Vanguard (Ocala) Knights, and with Alachua County schools on spring break this week, the Hurricanes probably wished they had been on a break.

Vanguard sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and scored seven runs en route to a 14-4 romp over Gainesville in five innings.

Vanguard (12-3) took advantage of a Gainesville error and four Hurricanes walks to put the seven runs on the board.

Gavin Aiton led off the game with a walk against Gainesville starter Cade Dixon. Aiton stole second base and went to third on a passed ball. After Jake Wells struck out, Clayton Antonucci walked and stole second as well.

Nate Navarro followed with a two-run single to left for a 2-0 Knights lead.

It looked like Gainesville (6-5) would get out of the inning without further damage after Dixon induced Cooper Ragle to ground out to third.

But Gainesville’s second baseman, BJ Johnson, had a grounder go right between his legs into the right field to score Navarro for a 3-0 Vanguard lead.

Then the bottom really dropped out for Gainesville.

Vanguard third baseman Bobby Blanco followed with an RBI double to make it 4-0. After Brendan McLaughlin singled and Spencer Payne walked to load the bases, Aiton came up for the second time in the inning and delivered another two-run single to left to extend the lead to 6-0.

That was the end of the night for Dixon, who allowed four hits, three walks and seven runs in only 2/3 of an inning.

Wells finished off the inning with an RBI single off reliever Ty Quinn to extend the Knights lead to 7-0.

Gainesville got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a bases-loaded walk. But Vanguard put up four more runs in the top of the third for an 11-1 advantage. Antonucci had a two-run single and Navarro followed with a two-run double.

Vanguard scored two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to get to the 10-run rule. Navarro led their nine-hit attack with two hits and four RBI.

The two teams combined for 20 walks as the five-inning game took nearly two and a half hours.

Gainesville is off for the rest of spring break before returning to action at P.K. Yonge next Tuesday.
