Earlier this week the Santa Fe (Alachua) softball team put itself in position to play for a spot in its first final four since 2015 with a shutout win against Trinity Prep (Winter Park).

However, on Friday night, it was top seed Montverde Academy who would get the shutout as the host Eagles eliminated No. 2 seed Santa Fe, 3-0, in an FHSAA Class 3A-Region 2 Final.

Sophomore Sarah Burns pitched six innings for Santa Fe and allowed just two earned runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout, but a pair of runs allowed in the second inning proved to be the difference.

Junior Danika Spinogatti hit a solo home run, sophomore Colby Reish hit a pair of doubles and drove in a run, and eighth grader LaBreah Sands had a double and an RBI to lead Montverde Academy.

J’lyn Guyden, Breleigh Ford, Amy Crosby, Montana Moen and Maren Hornsby each had a hit for Santa Fe off sophomore pitcher Nevaeh Williams, who didn’t walk anyone and struck out seven.

The Eagles (26-4) advanced to Tuesday’s Class 3A state semifinals, while the Raiders’ season ended at 23-5.
