
On Saturday night, the top-seeded Newberry girls basketball team won the FHSAA Class 3A-District 3 title with a 53-47 win at home against No. 2-seed Bradford (Starke).
The Panthers, who defeated No. 4 seed Baldwin, 65-26, in the district semifinals, improved to 16-6 and clinched a spot in next week’s Class 3A state tournament.
It was their first district title since 2017.
They were one of three Alachua County girls basketball teams to win a championship joining Gainesville and Eastside.
GHS dominates Lincoln
The No. 2-seed Lady Hurricanes avenged last season’s 51-49 overtime loss in the district championship round by dominating top-seed Lincoln (Tallahassee) on Saturday, 64-41, for the 6A District 2 title.
Eastside rallies past Dunnellon
After a slow start falling behind 9-5 after the first quarter, No. 2-seed Eastside outscored top-seed Dunnellon on Saturday in each of the final three quarters to win the Class 4A District 7 championship, 45-36.
It marked the second straight district title for the Rams.
Wildwood takes title over Williston
In a matchup of the top two teams in Rural District 7 on Saturday night, the No. 1 seed Wildwood Wildcats eased past No. 2 seed Williston, 68-49, to win the district title.
Wildwood, which improved to 21-0, will host a regional tournament game next week, while the Red Devils (18-3) will await an at-large berth in Rural-Region 4.
