The high school football season kicked off Friday night as area teams used the preseason contest to prepare for next week’s regular-season opener.
Oak Hall (Gainesville) edged the hosting P.K. Yonge Blue Wave (Gainesville), 14-13, in a game that was delayed nearly an hour due to lightning.
Both teams advanced to the playoffs in 2021, but both have young rosters as P.K. Yonge graduated 16 seniors from last year’s 8-4 team and returns one starter on offense and three starters on defense.
The Blue Wave will compete in the new Class 1S-District 3 and open the season at home against Eastside on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m.
The Oak Hall Eagles went 6-2 last year but have only four seniors on its roster.
The Eagles open the season at home on Aug. 26 against St. Joseph Academy (St. Augustine).
