The Hawthorne Hornets relied on patience, and a smothering defense to defeat the Fort Meade Miners 12-7 in the second round of the Class 1-A postseason Friday night.
After both teams played to a scoreless tie through three quarters, the Hornets came alive with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break the scoring draught and take a 12-0 lead. The Miners cur the lead to 12-7 with a final period touchdown of its own, but could get no closer.
The win gives Hawthorne an 8-2 record on the season. They face the Wildwood Wildcats next week in the Class 1-A Region 4 finals.
Fort Meade ends its season with a 5-4 record.
