
One week down in the high school football regular season, and already there are changes at the top of the Prep Zone Power Poll.
Mandarin (Jacksonville) moves into the top spot after pounding RV (receiving votes) Creekside (St. Johns), 57-13, in their opener last Friday. The Mustangs move up from No. 5 in the preseason poll to the No. 1 ranking this week, receiving five of the 10 first-place votes
Buchholz is right behind Mandarin at No. 2. The Bobcats (1-0) picked up a win at No. 17T Vanguard (Ocala), 24-7, and this week take a lengthy trip to Vero Beach. Buchholz also received a first-place vote.
St. Augustine drops a spot to third this week despite garnering three first-place votes. The Yellow Jackets had no trouble with their rivalry game at Palatka, winning 42-6.
Hawthorne remains at No. 4. The two-time defending state champion Hornets had no problem in their opener, rolling 51-0 at Anclote (Holiday). Hawthorne has a showdown on Friday with 11th-ranked Newberry.
Defending state champion Mainland (Daytona Beach) drops from the top spot in the preseason rankings to fifth. The Bucs were upset at home by University (Orange City), 31-28. University joins the poll this week, shooting all the way to No. 12.
Raines (Jacksonville) jumps five spots to lead off the second five at No. 6. The Vikings pulled off a 32-23 win at rival Bolles (Jacksonville). Bolles dropped from 13th to 15th.
The rest of the second 10 includes seventh-ranked Bradford (Starke), No. 8 Madison County, ninth-ranked Trinity Christian (Jacksonville), and Bartram Trail (St. Johns), who is 10th.
Among the Mainstreet Daily News ranked teams are No. 11 Newberry, and Chiefland and Columbia (Lake City), who are tied for 19th. Receiving votes are Union County (Lake Butler), Williston and Suwannee (Live Oak).
Besides University, Dunnellon also moves into the poll this week at No. 16. Nease (Ponte Vedra) is in a tie for 17th after knocking off RV Ponte Vedra.
Chiefland is also new to the rankings after knocking off previous-No. 14 rival Williston 18-10. Williston drops out this week along with Riverside (Jacksonville), Trinity Catholic (Ocala), and Ponte Vedra.
Columbia is also new to the poll as the Tigers are tied for 19th with Chiefland and University Christian (Jacksonville). Columbia defeated rival RV Suwannee 13-0 in their opener.
The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, girls basketball, boys basketball, softball & baseball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters and it is powered by Anytime Fitness of Gainesville.
