Resurfacing is underway for a nine-mile stretch of State Road 24, from where it meets State Road 222 in Gainesville to U.S. 301 in Waldo.

The project includes a shoulder treatment, reconstruction of the curb and gutters, drainage improvements, highway signing, guardrail construction, traffic signals and any other incidental construction such as sidewalk and ADA ramp repairs or additions as needed.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has contracted Whitehurst, V. E. & Sons to complete the project.

FDOT had originally proposed multiple other improvements and features for the road, including splitting the road into one-way pairs through Waldo, with the addition of on-street parking and a buffered bike lane to encourage downtown economic development.

Waldo citizens heard the plan in July 2023, and FDOT gathered input from residents to find out what they wanted to see changed about the road.

Citizens rejected the extra features, and the project was stripped down to resurfacing, according to an FDOT project manager.

The resurfacing project, with an estimated completion date of May 18, 2025, is set to cost $21.5 million.

The company doing the work has made the road hazardous for motorcycles. The ridges and uneven lanes and turn around areas have a lip protruding that will catch the front wheel of a MC and can cause it to steer off balance.
