The Matheson History Museum announced Monday that Salvatore Cumella will step into the executive director role, and he started the new job the same day.
A UF graduate, Cumella founded Helios Preservation Consulting and worked as a historic preservation planner for the city of Gainesville and senior planner for the city of Fernandina Beach.
“I am both honored and excited to take the helm at the Matheson, continuing its proud tradition of serving Alachua County for over thirty years,” Cumella said in a release. “I look forward to preserving and celebrating the rich tapestry of our local history, showcasing the diverse stories that shape our community.”
He said he wants to enhance the visitor experience with dynamic programming, active community engagement and strong partnerships.
Kaitlyn Hof-Mahoney, current executive director, announced earlier this year that she would step down to pursue other opportunities. She has worked at the Matheson for nine years, with the last three and a half as executive director.
The museum’s Search Committee started searching for candidates in April and made its recommendation in August.
Matheson Board President Robert Mounts said Hof-Mahoney has left the museum in excellent shape for her successor. She will work with Matheson until Sept. 28 in order to overlap with Cumella.
His enthusiasm and strong background in historic preservation is just what the Matheson needs,” Hof-Mahoney said of Cumella. “I am confident that the Museum will continue to flourish under his leadership and look forward to seeing his vision for the future of the Matheson.”
