Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies responded a call for service in the Linton Oaks community, concerning multiple shots being fired on April 1st. Information received indicated there were two subjects involved in the incident. Multiple shots were fired and one of the involved parties may have been shot. Both subjects were seen leaving the area prior to the arrival of the ACSO; one on foot with a dog and the second in a vehicle.

 The investigation revealed that Joseph Scott and his family were outside of their residence when Christopher Mavins was observed walking a large dog without a leash.  A verbal argument between Scott and Mavins ensued when the dog approached Scott’s family. 

During the argument Mavins gestured that he was possibly armed, pointing towards his waist band. Scott returned to his home and armed himself and then continued to argue with Mavins. 

Ultimately, Mavins fired his weapon, striking Scott twice, once in the chest and once in the lower leg. Scott fired his gun at least once during the incident and then left the area after he realized that he had been shot.

 Deputies located Scott leaving the area in his vehicle, rendered medical attention, and an ambulance transported him to a nearby hospital due to his injuries.

Deputies located Mavins and the firearm used in the incident.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Scott was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital. Both Scott and Mavins were arrested and transported to the Alachua County Jail.

Mavins was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Scott  was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
