Firefighters extinguish lightning-caused residential fire in Newberry

Multiple firefighting units responded to a three-floor, multi-unit residential structure fire in Newberry that was started by a lightning strike on Sunday afternoon.

According to an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) release, units from ACFR, Newberry Fire Rescue and High Springs Fire Department responded at 5:41 p.m. to the blaze in the Country Way development.

The dispatch center received a call saying that lightning had struck the roof of one of a three-story building from an afternoon thunderstorm.

When firefighters arrived, they found an interior fire going. They controlled the blaze and the damage was limited to the apartment of origin.

Five families were displaced due to the fire, but no loss of life or injuries were reported.
