A Gainesville man died Wednesday when the truck he was riding in crashed into a palm tree in the median.
According to Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR), the accident occurred just after noon at the intersection of SE 39th Terrace and SE Hawthorne Road. Gainesville Fire Rescue and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) also responded to the scene.
For reasons still under investigation, a 2003 Chevy S-10 was traveling eastbound when it veered off the road and struck a tree head on.
“Units arrived to find a single-vehicle that struck a tree in the median,” ACFR reported. “Units on scene quickly extricated an entrapped patient with the Jaws of Life.”
ACFR transported the driver, a 64-year-old Gainesville man, and the passenger, a 74-year-old Gainesville man, to UF Health Shands Hospital. The driver is in serious condition, while the passenger was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
FHP did not report whether the men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
