A space heater started a fire that destroyed a two-story residence in Waldo on Tuesday morning.
According to an Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) release, units from ACFR, with assistance from the Melrose and Windsor Fire Departments, responded to the blaze at 9:06 a.m. at Kennard Street near the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 and Waldo Road (State Road 24).
When firefighters arrived, they found the residential structure engulfed with heavy fire conditions. Crews worked to bring the fire under control and also encountered downed live power lines.
The southbound lane of Waldo Road was closed while crews were working and all of the building’s occupants were able to exit the structure.
The fire marshal determined a space heater caused the blaze.
I’m glad nobody got hurt. Especially a good Samaritan bystander who entered the burning building saving an occupant and 2 dogs. It’s ironic that the building used to house a cigar rolling business and it went up in smoke

was the space heater unattended and turned on? Those can go bad. It is scary to hear a space heater could do this or wiring in the building.
