One person died and another is in critical condition after a plane crashed at the Cross City Airport on Sunday afternoon.

According to Taylor Cole at the Cross City Airport, the Lancair 360 two-seat airplane possibly had engine trouble when the pilot attempted to make a landing around 4 p.m.

“There was an issue with their onboard radio, could have been an electronic issue of some sort, and then a few witnesses here who observed the crash heard the sounds of the engine sputtering on the approach,” Cole said.

The pilot chose to go to the far side of the runway, past what would have been a safer landing approach, made a downward turn, and possibly stalled or lost complete power, Cole said. The plane then went down at the end of the runway.

One person died on impact and the second is in critical condition at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

Cole said the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident.

Thanks for explaining this in such simple terms!

What is meant by “far side of the runway”? Planes are still controllable even after losing an engine… instructors always teach engine loss procedures… something else happened…. hoping for a full recovery for the person at Shands….0

Greg would have known to keep his speed up while making that approach. Would love to know the tail number of his plane so I can be an interested party with the NTSB. The other crash he had was in a Lance in Indy: dual mag fail.
