The Alzheimer’s Association has set its annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s for Saturday, Oct. 26, at Trinity United Methodist Church, and invites community members to join the walk to increase Alzheimer’s awareness and honor those affected by the brain disorder.

The day of the walk will include the Promise Garden ceremony, in which walkers will carry flowers in various colors representing their personal connection to the disease. The experience is intended to signify solidarity in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said John Tull, chair for the 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Gainesville. “We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”

Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the opening ceremony is set for 10 a.m., to be followed immediately by the walk.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association release, nearly 7 million Americans live with the disease, and it is a leading cause of death in the nation. This leaves 11 million family members and friends providing care to those living with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias. Over 580,000 Floridians are living with the disease, and 840,000 caregivers in the state.

This year’s walk is presented by Meldon Law, and Edward Jones is the national presenting sponsor.
