The Veterans for Peace Gainesville Chapter 14 will hold its annual Peace Poetry and Peace Scholarship awards ceremony on Saturday.

The event will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville at 4225 NW 34th St. and will feature music and refreshments while showcasing poetry written by area K-12 students.

The chapter selected 22 young authors from the hundreds of poems submitted to read their poems during the event. The Veterans for Peace will also announce this year’s four recipients for its Peace and Social Justice Scholarship. Each awardee will receive $1,500.

The awardees will be highlighted at the Winter Solstice Peace Concert to be held in December.

“The Peace Poetry Contest is our way of stimulating discussion and critical thinking among our area youth, addressing tough subjects early on is the best way to achieve our greater cause of world peace,” said Scott Camil, the VFP Chapter 14 president, in a press release.
