Some areas of the country and world have the luxury of trees whose leaves change into rich orange and gold leaves as the chill of the fall season creeps into the air. For the last few months of the year, the leaves cover the ground and turn into piles to jump into like kids…or for kids to jump into, too.  

But in places like Gainesville – where the UF football stadium is affectionately known as “The Swamp” – that are closer to the equator and where our air goes from hot to slightly less hot, we need Hobby Lobby and Walmart aisles to turn orange and yellow with fall decorations, and coffee shops to release pumpkin spice menus so we can know when the season starts.  

Fortunately, the season of mugs steaming with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves comes earlier and lasts longer every year with increasing cravings for the warm comforts of pumpkin spice. 

So disregard the fact that the autumnal equinox is marked for 8:44 a.m. on Sept. 22 this year. Pumpkin spice menus are out. Fall is here. Grab something off these local, seasonal spreads and celebrate the occasion of pumpkin spice in the air.
