The Hippodrome Theatre will reveal “Running Mates” on Friday just in time for Florida’s elections next month, spinning the election cycle into a slapstick comedy.  

The performance revolves around the Storm family, with patriarch Sam Storm holding the mayoral seat of Anderson, Georgia, for 20 years without opposition. But local elections take a different turn when Sylvia Storm, Sam’s wife, throws her name into the ring following some controversy. 

Stephanie Lynge, director of the show, said the Hippodrome wanted to balance its first show, “Fahrenheit 451,” with a lighter fare.  

“We hope that the audience will have fun as well and maybe have just that breath of air in the middle of this political season,” Lynge said. 

Two previews will come on Wednesday and Thursday followed by the first showing Friday at 8 p.m. “Running Mates” will perform from Oct. 14-30 on every Thursday through Sunday. You can find tickets online.  

The play includes the expected political items: leaked videos, drama and unexpected third-party candidates. The six-member cast includes three previous Hippodrome performers and three newcomers to the theatre.  

“One of the things that this play gives me is a little bit of hope,” Lynge said. “These folks find a way to talk across the aisle, to talk across differing perspectives. And I really, truly believe in my heart of hearts that’s what we need.”   

She said musicals tend to be the most popular shows, followed by comedies, farces and then dramas. But with a wide-ranging community, Lynge said drama-enthusiasts abound as well. “Fahrenheit 451” extended its run by six shows because of the high turnout.  

After “Running Mates,” the Hippodrome will transition to its New Works Festival followed by “Murder for Two: Holiday Edition” and “A Christmas Carol.”
