The city of Gainesville will host its second annual Vision Zero Open House on Wednesday to announce updates on roadway updates from area public safety agencies, the Gainesville Transportation Department and community partners.
The community is invited to attend the event, which is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Thomas Center (302 NE 6th Ave.) in Gainesville.
In 2018, the Gainesville City Commission adopted a Vision Zero policy with the intent to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries in the city by 2040.
The Vision Zero Network recently recognized Gainesville as a Vision Zero Community, reflecting the city’s commitment to prioritizing roadway safety for all users.
The event will be tabled by the members of the Gainesville Vision Zero Working Group and will include the Gainesville Fire Rescue, Gainesville Police Department, Gainesville Transportation Department, Alachua County Growth Management and Public Works, the Florida Department of Health in Alachua County, the Florida Department of Transportation, the University of Florida and UF Health.
Florida Pedestrian and Bicycling Safety Resource Center representatives will also inform attendees about the proper fit and use of bicycle helmets. Helmets are also recommended for users of electric scooters.
The city launched a micromobility program in 2022 that introduced and regulated the use of electric scooters. Micromobility units will be on hand for demonstration and test rides during the event.
