
The city of Gainesville will observe the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States with a remembrance ceremony for those who lost their lives on Wednesday morning.
The event will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the City Hall Plaza (200 E. University Ave.) and will open with a joint honor guard from the Gainesville Police Department and Gainesville Fire Rescue.
The first moment of silence is slated at 8:46 a.m. (EDT), the moment when the first airplane crashed into the World Trade Center North Tower in New York City. In unity with other nationwide ceremonies, leaders have asked houses of worship to toll their bells at that time.
A city press release stated, “On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, community leaders will ask all neighbors to honor the victims of the attacks by observing the day with acts of kindness, generosity and service.”
There ceremony is open to the public and will also be live streamed on the city’s Facebook page. The event will be recorded and later broadcast on Community 12TV on Cox Cable Channel 12, along with being uploaded to the city of Gainesville YouTube channel. The recorded ceremony will be available on GNV TV through Amazon and Roku streaming platforms.
