Haile Homestead to host “Enslavement in Alachua County” lecture

A lecture series called The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County, kicks off with its first of four lectures this weekend.
The second lecture in a series called “The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County,” will be held on Saturday.

The Alachua County Community Remembrance Project, in partnership with the Alachua NAACP and the Racial Justice Committee of United Church of Gainesville, will present a special lecture on “Enslavement in Alachua County” by Dr. Courtney Taylor of UF African American Studies on Saturday.

The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at The Haile Homestead, located at 8500 Archer Rd. in Gainesville, with a tour of the Homestead by Director Karen Kirkman.

This lecture series, titled “The Other Book: Black History in Alachua County,” explores the history of Alachua County from the perspective of “The Other Book.” Before schools were integrated, Black teachers would use both government-sanctioned texts and alternative materials written by Black authors that offered a more accurate portrayal of the Black experience.

Let’s keep reliving and reliving and reliving being slaves.
Keep stoking the fires of hatred and racism. Will society ever be able to move past previous injustices and live together in harmony?
