The Alachua County Animal Resources (ACAR) and Best Friends Animal Society will be hosting a “Home for the Holidays” animal adoption event this weekend.

The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Alachua County Animal Resources shelter at 3400 NE 53rd Ave. in Gainesville.

PetSmart at 3736 SW Archer Rd. will host free adoptions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The animals are spayed or neutered with up-to-date vaccinations and all adoption fees are waived. Adopters need to bring their ID and can view adoptable pets by clicking here.

“The overcrowding crisis is a nationwide concern, and we will need the community’s help for a long time,” said Shelter Supervisor Faren Healey in a press release. “We need people to step forward and adopt or become fosters with us. The more adoptions and fosters we have, the more lives we can save. If you’ve ever thought about adopting a pet, now is the time.”

Due to overcrowding, the Gainesville shelter was forced to pause all intakes on Nov. 15.

“When you foster or adopt, you are not just saving that animal but freeing up space in our facility, so we can focus on saving more lives,” said EVO coordinator Sarah Gilley in a press release. “Every animal deserves to be in a home for the holidays, so we are hopeful our community will join us for another amazing event with Best Friends Animal Society.”
