HCA Florida North Florida Hospital resumed surgeries after the medical facility stopped certain elective procedures due to equipment issues over two weeks ago.
The Gainesville medical facility has not disclosed exactly when it shut down surgeries, but a Jan. 18 statement said it, “made the proactive decision to reschedule certain elective procedures due to an equipment-related issue that impacted presurgical processes.”
The hospital did not provide an explanation for the equipment-related issues.
“The issue is being addressed to ensure we continue to maintain the highest standards of quality,” Lauren Lettelier, the hospital’s director of communications and community engagement, said in a Jan. 19 statement in response to a Mainstreet inquiry. “Patient safety is always our top priority. Having served the residents of North Central Florida for more than 50 years, we will continue to prioritize high-quality, compassionate, patient-focused care. We thank our patients, colleagues, and community for their patience and understanding.”
Surgeries were resumed in recent days but when asked, the number of procedures affected by the stoppage was not given.
“We have resumed surgeries, and our care teams are actively working to reschedule patients whose surgeries have been temporarily postponed,” she wrote in an email on Monday. “The wellbeing of our patients remains our highest priority and our care teams are working as diligently and quickly as possible.”
North Florida Hospital has more than 1,000 employees and treats more than 50,000 patients per year in its 510-bed facility.
This is a lie. Surgeries have not resumed and patients are not yet being rescheduled. We are being told they will “re-evaluate the situation” on Feb. 9.

I’ve said this before, but there seems to be no willingness to remedy it: your icon requesting our thoughts about an article gets in the way of reading the article. How can I have a thought about an article before I read it? Couldn’t you place the invitation at the end of the article,, thus assuring both that I’ve read the article and want to comment on it?
