Alachua County voted to lower its millage rate but increase taxes on Tuesday after a unanimous first reading of the 2024 property taxes, fire assessments and budget.  

The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will have a final vote on Sept. 26.  

The millages passed on Tuesday place the general county rate at 7.6414, 7.51% over the rollback rate, and the law enforcement rate at 3.5678, 8.19% over the rollback rate. The county projects that the new rates will net an extra $15 million and $2.8 million over the current year’s revenues.  

County Manager Michele Lieberman said the county’s budget for fiscal year 2024, starting Oct. 1, will be $751 million.  

The BOCC also voted to keep the fire assessment the same as this year but increase the stormwater assessment from $10 to $50 per equivalent residential unit.  

Last year, the BOCC voted to keep the millage rate even, netting $15 million more and resulting in a 7% tax increase.
