Kimberley Mullins, Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor at Gainesville High School, has written a play which has been accepted into the Tampa Bay Theatre Festival.
The play, “Single Black Female in the Navy,” will be performed at Hillsborough Community College on Sept. 2.
“All writers get rejection letters, so when I saw the first email saying they hadn’t made a decision yet, I thought that’s what was coming,” she said in a press release. “Then when I got another email saying it was accepted, I did a happy dance,” Mullins stated in a press release.
Mullins’ play was one of seven short plays selected out of the hundred submitted.
“You don’t see many plays or movies about women in the military, and definitely not women of color,” she said. “I wanted them to see themselves in this play,” Mullins said.
All the selected playwrights are required to stage their entries. GHS’ theater director Natalia Pegg has volunteered for her services. The two will be traveling to Tampa every weekend to work with the actors and to prepare.
The Acrosstown Repertory Theatre will be hosting a showcase/fundraiser for Mullins on Saturday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m.
