
The Buchholz High School math team won the Mu Alpha Theta national championship for the 16th time in 17 years over the weekend.
The team traveled to Las Vegas, where it won by 613 points, the second-highest margin in history, behind 2021’s COVID-19 year, according to Buchholz coach Will Frazer.
Frazer said though attendance at the national championship has been declining since COVID, there were still over 500 students from 33 schools competing.
“Our kids worked very hard this summer to make sure they were ready,” Frazer wrote in an email. “They performed well above our expectations. Our kids had a great week in Las Vegas seeing the sights and going to a show in addition to all of the math.”
Last year, the team maintained its streak of winning the national title, but only won second place at state. This year, Frazer said the students rallied to earn back the state title, and they carried that strength to the national competition, bringing back 275 trophies, and taking first place in the following events:
