Convicted murderer Pedro Bravo, who was convicted of the 2012 murder of his friend and UF student Christian Aguilar, reportedly died in the Okeechobee Correctional Institution on Wednesday.

According to an Eighth Judicial Circuit release, Bravo, 31, was convicted by an Alachua County Jury in August 2014 and received multiple life sentences, along with other crimes committed during the course of the murder.

Bravo had recently filed a motion for post-conviction relief as he alleged both new evidence purported to support his theory of defense and a recantation by an inmate who had testified against him during the trial. The court ordered the State Attorney’s Office to respond to Bravo’s motion, leading to an investigation into the claims.

State Attorney Investigator Tom Mullins determined that probable cause existed to believe that Bravo had fabricated his claims in a coordinated effort with multiple individuals, according to the release.

State Attorney Brian Kramer filed a multi-count information that charged Bravo with conspiracy to commit perjury, racketeering, perjury in a capital proceeding and tampering with a witness in a capital proceeding. Kelcie Edwards and Michael Angelo were also charged in that case and were arrested on these same charges.

Bravo was ordered to return to Alachua County to face these new charges and was scheduled to appear in court on March 23.

Kramer notified the family of Aguilar of Bravo’s death. Bravo’s death is under investigation by the Inspector General of the Florida Department of Corrections.

Edwards’ and Angelo’s cases remain open.
