A Lake City police officer was shot during an altercation that occurred at an Easter celebration event on Sunday evening at Annie Mattox Recreation Center.
According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, LCPD officers and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies were providing crowd control for the more than 2,000 attendees at NE Center Avenue when an altercation broke out between several attendees at 8:06 p.m. Officers and deputies intervened, gunshots were fired and an LCPD officer was shot.
Law enforcement took three individuals into custody and detectives interviewed them on scene to determine their involvement, if any.
The officer was transported to a nearby trauma center for treatment and, as of Sunday night, was awake and communicative with emergency responders during transport to the hospital.
LCPD officer Marcus Hardison sustained a gunshot wound to his right arm. Harrison is a K-9 handler, but his K-9 partner, Niko, was not involved in the incident. Harrison has been with LCPD for four and a half years.
Rumors circulating on social media falsely claimed another officer shot Harrison, according to an LCPD release.
“No officers or deputies discharged their service weapons during this incident,” said Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler in the release.
This remains an active investigation and LCPD is asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or may have video footage, to contact detectives at 386-752-4343.
