A convicted felon was arrested on Sunday after Lake City Police officers discovered a handgun in his vehicle.
According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release, Deandre Jajuan Perkins, 38, was pulled over at 8:50 p.m. after failing to stop at a stop sign on NW Georgia Avenue at the intersection of NW Long Street.
The officer called for backup after he smelled a strong odor of burnt and fresh marijuana while he spoke to Perkins. The backup officer arrived and approached the vehicle on the passenger side where he spotted a handgun between the center console and the passenger seat.
The occupants were then removed from the vehicle and Perkins was arrested for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. A consensual search of the vehicle also yielded three bags of marijuana.
Perkins was transported to the Columbia County Detention Center and is being charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.
