Gainesville man receives 35-year sentence for February murder

A 25-year-old Gainesville man was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Dec. 12 for a fatal shooting at Pointe 23 Apartments in February.

Dyquann Freeney was sentenced following a plea deal with prosecutors. Freeney was charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, tampering with evidence, conspiracy to commit robbery with a firearm and shooting or throwing missiles into dwellings, buildings or vessels.

A jury indicted Freeney, along with Kemeon Lee and Mikhail Lawson, in April for killing and robbing Caleb Fries.

The three were arrested on March 20 for the shooting that occurred on Feb. 19 when Gainesville Police Department officers responded to 740 NE 23rd Avenue around 8:58 p.m. to the reports of gunfire.

When officers and EMS personnel arrived, they confirmed the death of a victim, 17-year-old Fries, suffering from a single gunshot wound sitting inside a vehicle.

Apartment residents told officers they heard three to five gunshots fired and witnesses said three black males were observed fleeing toward NE 23rd Avenue, one of whom was carrying a firearm.
