Columbia County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a student on Thursday who had a firearm inside his vehicle in the Columbia High School (CHS) parking lot.
According to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) press release, a CHS resource deputy arrested 17-year-old Nicholas Moreland for having a firearm in his possession on the Lake City campus.
The CHS resource deputy received a tip from a partnering law enforcement agency working on a separate investigation about a student possibly bringing a firearm onto campus. Moreland was charged with possession of a firearm on a school campus and transported to the Columbia County Detention Facility.
“We are grateful for those who partner with us to keep our children safe,” said Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter in a statement. “I want to assure the community we will aggressively investigate any concern involving school safety, and we encourage people to speak out when there is a potential threat.”
